FOCUS- The Preparation
Introduction:
Capitalizing on one of the many goals of the Oakland Early College FOCUS curriculum, this class will lean heavily into turning the students minds to life after OEC. Throughout the course we will focus on a number of skills that enhance students’ abilities to maximize their potential for success after they move past high school. We will spend extensive time helping students seek and utilize helpful aids, improved comprehension of non-fiction text, financial literacy, global focus, career investigations, and next level academic pursuits. The goal of this FOCUS curriculum is to prepare the students for life after OEC.
Objectives:
Student Expectations:
Ø Students will come to class prepared for the day’s lessons. This means that students will have all necessary materials.
Ø Students will maintain a level of organization of their materials.
Ø Students will participate in all activities in class, including challenges, projects, and daily classwork investigations.
Ø Students will attempt to learn, understand, and implement the strategies that are learned, not just in this course, but across all their current classes.
Ø Students will respect each other and the materials provided.
Grading:
Through the duration of the course we will have a number of assignments varying greatly in size, difficulty, and expected time commitment. All of these assignments will be graded on a point based system which will accumulate and be responsible for up to ninety percent of their overall semester grade. The remaining ten percent is reserved for their semester final project that will be explained at a later date. Much of the assignments will be graded in multiples of three though the type and goal of each assignment can dictate the overall point total.
Late Submission:
All assignments that are submitted after the assigned due date and time will be considered late and subject to a deduction in points. The amount of deduction will be dependent on the assignment and tardiness of the task. As a guideline, tasks that are submitted shortly after the due date may qualify for a reduction up to one quarter of the points possible. Tasks that are submitted long after the due date could be reduced up to one third. Any task submitted with extreme tardiness may earn reduced credit up to fifty percent or will not be given any credit..
