Grading Scale
The final grade in this course will be comprised of the scores from the student's homework, individual tests, and final exam. The points awarded, per report card period, are based on a weighted scale per task. Each assessment and the sum total of homework throughout the grade period will be equally split. A potential bonus may be added at the end of the semester based on the overall homework grade. At the semester the weighted average of the two marking periods and the final exam (42.5%, 42.5%, and 15%) will yield the final semester grade.
Homework
Early on in each new unit, students will receive a homework list that covers most all the homework assignments in the unit. As we progress each day the students will be informed as to which assignments should be completed at any time. This will allow them to always know what they should have done. All homework for the unit should be completed two class days prior to the unit's assessment. On the day the homework is to be completed, students should come ready with the rough draft of all homework completed and questions ready for a day of "peer editing." Peer editing days are designed to not only help students with understanding of the homework problems in the unit, but enable them to help each other and and in future be capable of creating, sustaining, and leading study groups. All homework for the unit will be requested for submission on test day.
Individual Tests
The individual test is a formal assessment on whether or not the student understands the concepts covered throughout the unit. This is the largest portion of the student's grade.
Final Exam
The conclusion of each semester will require an exam. The exam will cover all topics covered throughout the semester and the students will be given approximately 100 minutes to complete it.
** On any given assessment, be it a test, an exam, or homework, current concepts may be assessed and review concepts are always fair game. That is, on any given assessment students may be asked to demonstrate their understanding of math topics from prior units and even prior classes. This is to keep them thinking about those past concepts, reinforce their understanding, and provide a more deep and rich understanding of the mathematics they learn.**
