Grading Scale
The final grade in these courses will be comprised of the scores from the student's homework, team tests, individual tests, and final exam. The points awarded, per report card period, are based on a weighted scale as follows- homework 30%, team tests 23%, individual tests 47%. At the semester the weighted average of the two marking periods and the final exam (45%, 45%, and 10%) will yield the final semester grade.
Homework
At the beginning of each new unit, students will receive a homework list that covers most all the homework assignments in the unit. As we progress each day the students will be informed as to which assignments should be completed at any time. This will allow them to always know what they should have done. Approximately every week we will have a "homework quiz." These homework quizzes will be presented with no prior knowledge, they will be from questions that were in their homework, they may use their homework on them, and the students will be asked to complete them and submit them with all of the homework up to that point. They will then earn a grade on the homework quiz and on their homework completion. It is these two grades that dominate the homework category. Additional classwork and other random assignments and extra credit will comprise the rest of the homework grade. If a student preforms poorly on the homework quiz I may give them a "fix it" instead of a grade. When entered into Power School it will go in as a zero but will have a comment icon next to the assignment. Within that comment will be the words "fix it." Students that have a fix it can take the quiz back and spend a few days learning how to correctly do the problems. They will complete the quiz and resubmit it to me and earn reduced points. This system is set up to utilize homework as a learning tool and not an assessment piece. The student would have a chance to learn the material, try it on the homework, ask questions on it either through class questions or office hours, correct it, and then illustrate they know it. If at that point they can not demonstrate proficiency then they are allowed to relearn it and resubmit it.
Team Tests
The team test is a group assessment that will be completed at the conclusion of each unit. It is designed as a review of the unit and a practice of specific concepts from the unit. We will typically take this assessment about a week before the individual assessment.
Individual Tests
The individual test is a formal assessment on whether or not the student understands the concepts covered throughout the unit. This is the largest portion of the student's grade.
Final Exam
The conclusion of each semester will require an exam. The exam will cover all topics covered throughout the semester and the students will be given approximately 100 minutes to complete it.
** On any given assessment, be it a test, an exam, or homework, current concepts may be assessed and review concepts are always fair game. That is, on any given assessment students may be asked to demonstrate their understanding of math topics from prior units and even prior classes. This is to keep them thinking about those past concepts, reinforce their understanding, and provide a more deep and rich understanding of the mathematics they learn.**
